Yes, tourists can rent a car in Dubai, and it is one of the easiest places in the world to do it. You need a few documents and a valid licence, and you can be driving the same day. This guide covers exactly what is required, the age limits, and a few rules of the road worth knowing before you set off.
What documents do tourists need?
If you are visiting Dubai on a tourist or visit visa, bring the following:
- Your passport.
- Your UAE entry stamp or visit visa.
- Your home country driving licence.
- An International Driving Permit (IDP) to go with that licence.
The IDP matters. On its own a foreign licence is often not enough for a tourist, but paired with an IDP it is accepted across the Emirates. Citizens of some countries can drive on their national licence alone for short stays, but an IDP removes any doubt, so it is worth arranging before you fly.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Dubai?
The minimum age is 23 for most cars. For higher-value luxury and exotic models the requirement is usually 25 or older, and some also ask for a licence you have held for a year or more. If you are eyeing something from the luxury range or a sports car, check the age rule for that specific model when you book.
Do residents need anything different?
UAE residents do not use an IDP. If you hold an Emirates ID and a valid UAE driving licence, that is all you need. Residents on a foreign licence usually have to convert it once they have residency.
Rules of the road worth knowing
- Salik is the toll system. Gates on roads like Sheikh Zayed Road charge automatically. Ask your rental company how tolls are handled on your car.
- Speed limits are enforced by camera, and fines are linked to the vehicle. With NCK these are settled fairly and clearly at the end of the rental.
- You can drive to other Emirates. A trip to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Ras Al Khaimah is fine in a standard rental, though some exotic models have conditions.
- Seatbelts are mandatory for everyone in the car, and using a handheld phone while driving carries a heavy fine.
Tip: take a few photos of the car when it is delivered. A good rental company expects it and it keeps the handover clean for both sides.
How much does it cost?
Rental costs in Dubai cover a wide range. Economy and standard cars sit at the lower end, while luxury models run higher. For a full breakdown of what the premium fleet costs, see our guide to luxury car rental in Dubai, or check live rates on the car price list.
